The once mainly dairying centre is expanding rapidly as a residential area for workers in Latrobe Valley industries and has 5000 children, including some from Moe, Yallourn and Morwell, attending its schools.
Sir Rohan praised Traralgon’s march of progress from a lowly creek (to aborigines “traralgon” meant river of little fish) to a dignified city.
The proclamation ceremony was attended by the Minister for Local Government (Mr. Porter), the leader of the Country Party (Sir Herbert Hyland) and mayors and shire presidents of nearby municipalities.
Afterwards Traralgon city council held an inaugural meeting at which Cr. Cooper was invested with the mayoral chain by Mr. Porter.
During the afternoon Sir Rohan and Lady Delacombe visited the Traralgon and District Hospital.
