Balmy Christmas Day to make way for scorching weekend

Melburnians are set to enjoy a warm, clear Christmas Day before scorching summer heat sets in later in the week.

Smoke blowing in from the Gippsland bushfires in the east of the state has made for a hazy morning in parts of Melbourne, with air quality expected to be rated as moderate in the city, Geelong and Latrobe Valley.

Melbourne is forecast to reach 27 degrees on Wednesday, with light winds clearing the smoky haze in the afternoon and no chance of rain.

It will be a much warmer Christmas in other parts of the state, with Mildura set to reach a scorching 39 degrees and Swan Hill forecast to hit 38 degrees.
