NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed two men, believed to be a father and his son, have died in the town of Cobargo.
The premier said authorities hold “grave concerns” about the welfare of a third person missing west of Narooma.
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said more than 100 fires are burning across NSW, 60 of which are uncontained and eight of which are at emergency level, with the worst of the blazes situated in the state’s south.
He said the community should “brace itself” for the likelihood of widespread property loss and added the fire had “spread faster and further” than modelling predicted.
Meanwhile in Victoria, four people remain unaccounted for and 43 buildings have been destroyed in East Gippsland as fire ravages the area.
Up to 4,000 people have sought shelter Mallacoota beach as fires engulfs the town.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed the Australian Defence Force will assist with the firefighting effort in Victoria.
