Queensland motorists have been stuck in driving hell all day as holidaymakers flock to the beaches on the Gold and Sunshine coasts, leading to grid lock in both directions on main roads.
Parts of the M1 have been more like a bike lane than a motorway today, with cars going at a summertime glacial pace.
Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads said “All lanes (are) affected” along certain stretches of the two busy highways.
On the M1 Pacific Highway, traffic along all southbound roads towards Currumbin and all northbound roads towards Robina has been clogged.
Motorists are told to expect delays and allow extra travel time.
The M1 Bruce Highway is much the same, with delays along all northbound lanes towards the Sunshine Coast.
The government run Qld Traffic website featured two words prominently – “Holiday congestion” – to explain the ongoing delays.
“Motorists are urged to show patience,” the website stated.
Drivers are not happy, with some turning to social media to vent their frustrations.
One man wrote on Twitter: “North bound traffic f**ked on the Bruce Highway.”
