Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says the uptick in the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state is from overseas travellers and people who have been in close contact with existing cases.
He said when travel advisory levels were raised, people who were overseas at the time chose to return home, and after being exposed to the infectious disease while overseas have tested since positive.
Professor Sutton stressed that is is “it is absolutely essential” to self-quarantine when you , and said there had been instances of people going out in public during their 14-day self-quarantine period.
He said if the trajectory of new cases continued, the health department would “have to consider new measures”.
